The TB12 method on doing a lot of stuff that’s not drinking

Ever pondered how Tom Brady maintains his legendary status on the field? It's not just his arm; it's also his plate.

Today, let's dissect the TB12 diet, a nutritional playbook that's redefining the game.

The TB12 method isn't just about what you eat; it's a lifestyle overhaul.

It's about embracing daily habits across five pillars:

  1. Pliability

  2. Nutrition

  3. Hydration

  4. Movement

  5. Mental fitness

Here’s how TB12 is embracing these pillars at glance:

  • What you can eat: The TB12 Diet encourages users to follow a nutritious, well-rounded diet made up of 80% organic, plant-based ingredients and 20% high-quality animal products.

  • What you should focus on: According to the company’s website, the TB12 Method is “a holistic approach to healthy living that includes ways of picking up healthy habits in nutrition.”

  • How you should follow the plan: The TB12 Diet is designed to be a long-term lifestyle change rather than a short-term solution to weight loss or improved health.

And guess what? Alcohol just doesn't fit into that winning equation.

While we're all for finding balance, the TB12 method underscores the importance of ditching alcohol for optimal results.

So, if you're eyeing that TB12 mentality, performance, or physique, consider trading the cocktail for a mocktail.

Remember, it's not about deprivation; it's about fueling your best self 🚀

Nikki Glaser on how one book got her to stop drinking

We know Nikki Glaser as a force of comedic nature. This Ohio-born firecracker is a stand-up veteran, actress, and host who keeps audiences laughing with her brash honesty and sharp wit. If you tuned into the Tom Brady roast this past weekend, you know exactly what we mean about brash honesty… she smoked him! With that said, Nikki has also been free of alcohol for years and doesn’t plan to go back.

On the Rogan podcast, Nikki talks about how one book changed her life and helped her stop drinking.

Does Nikki’s reflection on what happened to her every time she said she was “just going to have two tonight” sound familiar?

“The voice in your head says, ‘I’m just gunna have two tonight.’ But then you get that voice drunk and that voice is like ‘have another.’ So you can’t plan for how you are going to feel two drinks in because you get drunk and then it keeps going.”

Nikki’s honesty and will to address her reality is what makes her a fellow Proofer. She is most definitely one of us!

Wait, but why? 🤔:

Why does drinking alcohol actually dehydrate you?

We just covered the TB12 method, which has a rather intense focus on hydration - recommending people drink upwards of half their body weight daily in water and electrolytes.

So in the spirit of TB12 hydration, let’s look at how drinking alcohol actually dehydrates you.

We've all heard the advice: alternate alcoholic drinks with water to avoid dehydration. But even though beer is 95% water, you often end up using the restroom more than you drank. Why is that?

The culprit is alcohol itself. It acts as a diuretic, a substance that increases urine production.

Here's the surprising part: even though you're taking in fluids, you actually end up losing more water than you drank to begin with.

Normally, your body regulates water content with a hormone called vasopressin (ADH). When dehydrated, ADH tells your kidneys to conserve water by producing less urine. Alcohol disrupts this process, lowering ADH production and making you pee more frequently.

Let's say you drink a 200ml beer. While your liver breaks down the alcohol into water and carbon dioxide, the lack of ADH means your kidneys bypass this new water, flushing it out along with extra body fluids.

This can lead to an additional 120ml of urine output on top of your regular production - as in drinking 1 beer will actually make you pee out ~1.6 beers worth of fluids!

Hydration is in, dehydration is out - just ask Tom.

Healthy Habit 🌱:

Eat more whole foods

Are you tired of feeling sluggish and constantly reaching for processed snacks? Or perhaps you aspire to be like Tom and other athletes, but don't know where to begin. Well, we have the perfect solution for you: incorporate more whole foods into your diet!

What are Whole Foods?

Whole foods are unprocessed or minimally processed foods that are close to their natural state. They include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, lean proteins, and healthy fats.

Why Eat Whole Foods?

  • More Nutrients: Whole foods are packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants, essential for overall health and well-being.

  • Improved Energy Levels: Whole grains provide sustained energy, while processed foods often lead to energy crashes.

  • Weight Management: Fiber in whole foods keeps you feeling fuller for longer, reducing cravings and aiding in weight management.

  • Reduced Disease Risk: Whole foods can help lower the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.

How to Start Eating Whole Foods:

  • Small Changes: Start by swapping one or two processed items with whole foods each week.

  • Embrace Color: Focus on incorporating a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables into your meals.

  • Choose Whole Grains: Opt for brown rice, quinoa, and whole-wheat bread instead of refined carbs.

  • Befriend Healthy Fats: Include healthy fats from sources like avocado, nuts, and fatty fish in your diet.

  • Label Literacy: Learn to read food labels and avoid products with excessive additives and sugars.

  • Plan and Prep: Planning meals and prepping snacks can help you resist unhealthy temptations.

  • Spice it Up: Explore herbs and spices for added flavor and potential health benefits.

  • Culinary Creativity: Experiment with new whole food recipes to keep things interesting.

  • Celebrate Consistency: Don't get discouraged by setbacks. Celebrate progress and focus on the long-term benefits.

Transitioning to whole foods is a journey, not a destination. By making small, sustainable changes, you can unlock a world of delicious and nutritious possibilities, empowering you to take charge of your health and well-being.

The easy way to stop drinking

Per Nikki Glaser’s recommendation, Allen Carr's book outlines The Easyway method. This will help you tackle quitting drinking from a unique angle, focusing on dismantling the psychological dependence rather than relying on willpower. Here's the gist:

  • Unraveling the Myth: Carr argues that alcohol doesn't bring genuine pleasure, but instead provides temporary relief from withdrawal symptoms and anxieties. He helps you see drinking as a cycle of dependence, not a source of enjoyment.

  • Freedom, Not Deprivation: The method aims to eliminate the desire to drink, removing the need to resist cravings through willpower. You'll quit feeling liberated, not deprived.

  • Conquering Fears: Common anxieties about quitting, like social awkwardness or missing the "fun" of drinking, are addressed. Carr helps you see these fears as unfounded and empowers you to navigate social situations comfortably without alcohol.

  • Embracing the Benefits: The method emphasizes the positive aspects of being alcohol-free – improved health, sharper mind, better sleep, and a newfound sense of control over your life.

Additional elements:

  • Understanding Addiction: Carr explains the psychological and physiological pull of alcohol, helping you break free from its grip.

  • Replacing Triggers: You'll identify situations that make you crave a drink and develop healthy alternatives to manage those moments.

  • Positive Reinforcement: The focus remains on the long-term benefits of quitting, keeping you motivated on your journey to becoming a happy non-drinker.

By dismantling the mental justifications for drinking, The Easyway method aims to make quitting a natural and positive experience, allowing you to break free from alcohol dependence without the struggle of willpower.
