Dejounte Murray on being comfortable in his own skin

You might know Dejounte Murray as a rising NBA star who is known for his lockdown defense and recent scoring outbursts with the Atlanta Hawks. What you probably didn’t know is that Dejounte doesn’t drink and outwardly talks about how he doesn’t need to drink to have fun.
In the quote below, Dejounte speaks to how comfortable he is with himself and that he doesn’t need to drink to have a good time.
"They see I don’t party. I don’t drink. I don’t smoke. And they see that and they are like ‘bro, why?’ You know what I am saying. They say, ‘go have fun.’ But I’m having fun. I try to tell them like, don’t let me affect what you do. I’ll be good regardless. But I am comfortable with who I am. I have fun sitting at home watching 6 games at a time. With my daughter, my family, my girl. You know what I mean? I have fun doing that.”
Dejounte’s comfortability with himself and his ability to have fun and be satisfied with the fact he doesn’t need to drink to live his life is what makes him a fellow Proofer.
Wait, but why? 🤔:
Why do we reach for Booze on a hot summer day?

Picture a scorching summer day. Beads of sweat cling to your forehead, your throat feels parched, and all you crave is a refreshing drink. What comes to mind? For many, it's an ice-cold beer or a fruity cocktail. But why?
The Why:
This association between alcohol and refreshment isn't a coincidence. A 2020 study by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) revealed that spending on alcohol advertising in the US peaks during the summer months. Decades of clever marketing have cemented the image of a cold beer on a hot beach as the ultimate way to cool off. Beer commercials often depict people enjoying a frosty beverage under the summer sun, linking the product with feelings of relaxation and rejuvenation.
The Misconception:
There's a misconception that alcohol cools you down. In reality, a 2018 study published in the journal Physiology & Behavior found that alcohol acts as a vasodilator, widening your blood vessels by up to 20%. This sends a surge of warm blood closer to the skin's surface, creating a temporary sense of coolness. However, it doesn't actually lower your body temperature – it just tricks your body's heat sensors.
The Reality:
While that ice-cold beer might be tempting on a scorching day, it can actually worsen the heat. Alcohol acts as a diuretic, increasing urination and dehydrating you. This dehydration disrupts your body's ability to sweat, the key way it cools itself down. Instead of reaching for that beer, grab some water. It hydrates you effectively and helps your body regulate its temperature, keeping you cooler and healthier in the summer heat.
So, why on earth would I drink beer or a cold alcoholic beverage on a hot summer day if all the above is true?
The short answer: you wouldn’t.
Healthy Habit 🌱:
